Passing of Aurelio Martínez, Ambassador of Garifuna Culture
With deep sorrow, we confirm the passing of Aurelio Martínez, legendary musician, composer, and Garifuna activist, who tragically lost his life on March 17, 2025, in a plane crash off the coast of Roatán, Bay Islands, Honduras.
Aurelio Martínez was more than an artist—he was a guardian of Garifuna heritage, a bridge between generations, and a symbol of cultural resilience. His unmistakable voice and mastery of the guitar brought Garifuna music to the world’s most prestigious stages, including his historic NPR Music Tiny Desk performance, where he became the first Honduran to take part in the renowned series.
His impact went beyond music. In 2005, he made history as the first Afro-Honduran elected to the National Congress, advocating for the rights and visibility of the Garifuna people. His dedication to cultural preservation earned him a place in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, where he worked alongside the legendary Youssou N’Dour. In 2022, he was recognized as a Mellon Fellow at New York University, further cementing his role as a leader and scholar in preserving Garifuna identity. Over the years, he released his music on Real World Records and Stone Tree Records.
Throughout his career, Aurelio toured the world, sharing Garifuna music on major stages and captivating audiences with his authenticity and passion. His sudden departure leaves an immense void in music, culture, and the ongoing fight to preserve Garifuna culture. However, his legacy will live on through his songs, in the memories of those who knew him, and in every young Garifuna inspired by his example.
On behalf of his team and loved ones, we deeply appreciate the outpouring of love and solidarity during this difficult time. In the coming days, we will share further details regarding the next steps and the ways in which we will honor his memory.
